Both include a number of security fixes for the cross-platform technology, with the Leopard update being the heftier of the two, weighing in at 122MB.

The Leopard update, which requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 brings J2SE 5.0 to 1.5.0_22 and Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_17; J2SE 1.4.2 is disabled by default in this update, as it’s no longer being updated. The 78MB Snow Leopard update brings Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_17 as well, and requires Mac OS X 10.6.2.

You can run down the full list for the Snow Leopard or Leopard flavors of the update. Both fix a number of vulnerabilities in Java 1.6.0_15, including one that could allow an untrusted Java applet to obtain elevated privileges, with which it could potentially do nasty things. The Leopard update also mortars a number of chinks in Java 1.5.0_20 along the same lines as above.

There’s a way to get smaller PDFs.

Here’s how: launch TextEdit, then choose Print from the File menu. From the PDF pop-up menu in the bottom-left corner of the dialog, choose Compress PDF. That’s it. It’ll compress the PDF and call it a day.

However, if you’re charging by the hour, and let’s pretend you are, you have a wonderful time-consuming option: Choose Print from the File menu, and from the second Presets pop-up menu choose ColorSync. From the Quartz Filter menu that appears, choose Add Filters. Click on the three-oval icon in the top-left corner of the dialog that appears, click on the filter named Reduce File Size, and then click-and-hold on the arrow button to the right of the filter and choose Duplicate Filter. This creates an unlocked filter you can edit.

Now click on the triangle to the left of the duplicate filter to show its options; this is where you choose what you want. I recommend clicking on the arrow to the left of Image Compression and dragging the magic slider that lets you control the amount of JPEG compression your PDF images receive. For smaller file sizes, drag the Quality Slider toward Minimum. Now go back to TextEdit and in the Print dialog, choose Colorsync from the second Presets pop-up menu, choose your new filter from the Quartz Filter pop-up menu and click Print. That’s it. (Whew!)

Google has unveiled a new service- Dashboard-that would allow users to see what information it holds on them.

The launch of Google dashboard is the search giant’s answer to critics who argue its dominance of the web allows it to collect too much personal data.

The page lists details of the Google products and services the account-holder uses, from which YouTube videos have been viewed to details of their Gmail inbox.

It acts as a one-stop-shop for people with accounts to adjust their privacy settings or delete content.

While the dashboard only shows what a user does when logged into a Google service, it reveals the breadth of the information collected.

“Some concerns have been raised about Google and privacy in the past few years and we always try to take proactive steps. No one asked us for this,” Sky News quoted Google spokesman Anthony House as saying.

“The information you’re seeing, we’ve always been transparent about that. But it has never been easy for people to go to one place.

“For many people, what you’re seeing is not a surprise but others might remember they signed up for a service they don’t use anymore… They can make a more informed choice,” he added.

He admitted that it was “not a total coincidence” that the dashboard was unveiled during a meeting of privacy regulators in Madrid, Spain.

Meanwhile, bloggers offered a mixed response to the launch.

Red Hat has released a new server virtualisation platform.

The company said that the new Enterprise Virtualisation for Servers offering would allow companies to better implement and manage server virtualisation setups. The platform will allow administrators to manage virtualized server deployments based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform.

Included in the Virtualisation for Servers platform will be Red Hat’s standalone Virtualisation Hypervisor system as well as a Virtualisation Manager tool designed to help administrators manage multiple virtualized server setups.

The server tool is seen as the second piece in Red Hat virtualisation strategy. The platform is designed to connect with the September release of the Enterprise Linux 5.4 operating system, which supports the kernel-based virtual machine system.

“Red Hat Enterprise Virtualisation is truly differentiated from other virtualisation solutions as it inherits the powerful functionality, hardware support and certification of Red Hat Enterprise Linux,” said Red Hat president of products and technologies Paul Cormier.

“We believe that Red Hat Enterprise Virtualisation, especially the management components, will allow customers to use virtualisation pervasively.”

Mac includes firewall software, you can use firewall to block unwanted network communication with your computer from users on other networks or the Internet.

In order to use Mac OS X services, such as personal file sharing, Windows sharing, or FTP access, you need to open ports in the firewall to allow traffic for that service to and from your computer. When you select a service in the Services pane of Sharing preferences, it is automatically selected in the Firewall pane, and the port is opened.

To prevent that service while the firewall is on, turn off the service in the Services pane.

To turn on firewall protection on your computer:

1. Open Apple Menu.

2. Open System Preferences

3. Click Sharing

And then click Start. To block incoming traffic on ports used by one of the sharing services, disable that service in the Services pane.

You can’t edit the firewall ports used by built-in services. They are enabled and disabled automatically when you turn the corresponding service on or off in the Services pane.

If you use iChat Bonjour, iTunes Music Sharing, or iPhoto Bonjour Sharing, make sure to allow those services in and out of your firewall. Turn on their services on the Firewall pane of Sharing preferences.
